In 2006 Turkish steel industry supplied 26 % (5.3 million tons) of its total scrap needs from the domestic market and 74 % (14.8 million tons) by
imports.
Turkey’s biggest scrap import sources are EU-27, USA and Russia. Imports
from Ukraine is showing a declining tendency
Despite expectations that the share of integrated facilities will increase in Turkey’s total steel production, EAF steel production and therefore scrap consumption is also expected to increase considerably and Turkey will strengthen its position as the biggest scrap importer of the world. Although global scrap demand is increasing, it is not expected that global steel industry will face a scrap shortage in the medium term
